 Hiroshima is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture, and the largest city in the Chugoku region of western Honshu, the main island of Japan. It became the first city in history subjected to nuclear warfare when the United States of America dropped a nuclear bomb (nicknamed "Little Boy") on August 6, 1945 during World War II.
Although many visitors, especially Americans, may feel apprehensive about visiting Hiroshima, it is a friendly, welcoming city, with as much interest in Western culture as anywhere else in Japan.
Nature abounds in Hiroshima Prefecture, which is surrounded both by ocean and mountains. Attractions include Setonaikai (Seto Inland Sea) National Park, Hibadogo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park, and West Chugoku Mountains Quasi-National Park.
