The Bali Hotels Association (BHA), a professional group of star-rated hotels and resorts in Bali, has recently formed its “BHA Green Team.” The Green Team consists of representatives from member hotels around Bali who are responsible for environmental and sustainability initiatives. The Green Team meets once a month to share ideas and attend presentations from various environmental organizations and green suppliers. It serves not only as a forum for education but also a place for sharing ideas and networking.
This year the BHA has selected as one of its key environmental initiatives “Say No to Disposable Plastic.” The Green Team members monitor and measure their plastics usage at each hotel and submit metrics every month to the BHA.
The objective of the initiative is to reduce and replace disposable plastics with more environmentally friendly alternatives such as bio-degradable plastics, glass, ceramics, etc., wherever possible. Participant hotels hope to achieve a 20 percent reduction in disposable plastics as a group within the next 12 months, which would equate to approximately 5,000 of kilograms of disposable plastics per month.
