InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has signed an agreement with RB Capital to manage Kuala Lumpur’s first Holiday Inn Express, which will be built along Bukit Bintang by Amsterling Hotels Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of RB Capital.

The hotel will rise in one of KL’s busiest retail and entertainment belts. The site is across from iconic developments such as Lot 10, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and Starhill Gallery, next to where RB Capital owns 33 Jalan Sultan Ismail, a twenty-six storey tower housing HSBC’s Malaysian headquarters.

The 200-room Holiday Inn Express Bukit Bintang is slated to open in 2015. Guests will experience well-designed, fresh comfortable rooms as well as enjoy complimentary breakfast and complimentary WiFi throughout the hotel.

Additionally, guests can be assured of friendly, efficient service, and facilities such as a self-service business centre and gym. Another feature of the hotel and a mainstay of the Holiday Inn Express brand is the ‘Great Room’ – an integrated social space that combines a lounge and bar.

The overall guest experience is one that is relaxed, affordable and hassle-free – a promise of the Holiday Inn Express brand, which targets savvy business and leisure travellers.

The property will be conveniently located on Bukit Bintang, popular amongst both travellers and locals, with easy access to key business areas and a variety of entertainment options, ranging from cafes, restaurants to shopping malls.

“Holiday Inn Express is a well-established brand that meets the demand for an international standard hotel that offers fuss-free comfort, convenience and value in great locations,” said Jan Smits, Chief Executive for Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA) at IHG. “The brand is growing strongly across the region, with a pipeline of over 50 hotels and more than 11,000 rooms in Asia Pacific alone. It’s a smart hotel choice for the savvy traveller, and we’re excited to continue our relationship with RB Capital in bringing Holiday Inn Express to Kuala Lumpur.”

Kishin R K, CEO and founder of RB Capital Group, said, “The Holiday Inn Express brand resonates well with the rising number of mid-tier business and leisure travellers visiting this part of the world. With the soaring and steady growth we’ve seen in the tourism and hospitality sectors across Southeast Asia, we are certain there are opportunities for strong growth and development in this area. We see Kuala Lumpur as a particularly strong market, especially now that Malaysia has placed tourism high up on its policy agenda.”

RB Capital Hotels is the hotel arm of RB Capital Group. Holiday Inn Express Bukit Bintang is the second Holiday Inn Express hotel that RB Capital Hotels is building in partnership with IHG. The Group is also building Holiday Inn Express Clarke Quay, the largest Holiday Inn Express hotel in Southeast Asia, which will open its doors in the first quarter of 2013.

RB Capital Group recently announced plans to list up to $2 billion of assets by 2013. The Group owns prominent office and retail developments with offices in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Some of the Group’s properties include Southeast Asia’s largest Holiday Inn Express opposite Clarke Quay; the EFG Bank Building opposite Singapore’s Parliament House; RB Capital Building at Raffles Place (formerly known as Royal Brothers Building) and 33 Jalan Sultan Ismail, which houses the HSBC headquarters in Malaysia.

Globally, there are currently 2,103 Holiday Inn Express hotels located across major cities, with nearly 470 hotels under development. In Asia Pacific, the brand is expanding rapidly from its current 31 hotels and will open new hotels in Singapore, India, Thailand and Indonesia within the next few years. The first Holiday Inn Express in Southeast Asia is set to open in Bangkok early next year. There are 51 Holiday Inn Express hotels in the pipeline for Asia Pacific.

Emirates, one of the world’s fastest-growing international airlines, celebrated the New Year in a ‘big’ way by becoming the first airline to operate a scheduled Airbus A380 service to Malaysia.

The airline’s flagship, operating as EK346, piloted by Malaysian national Captain Kwong Yung Ling arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Sunday afternoon to a traditional welcome of a water canon salute.

Joining Captain Kwong on the flight deck for the first flight was First Officer Abdulaziz Alusaimi from the United Arab Emirates.

“We have been eagerly awaiting the start of our Airbus A380 service to Malaysia, a country that we have been operating flights to since 1996. I am sure that this historic milestone in both Malaysian aviation history and in the Emirates story will further strengthen ties between Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates, in addition to promoting trade and tourism opportunities between the two nations,” said Richard Jewsbury, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, Far East & Australasia.

“The start of 2012 will be a busy time for Emirates, in addition to launching our A380 aircraft on one of our three daily non-stop flights between Dubai and Kuala Lumpur, we are also expanding our network to include Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro in South America from 3rd January and Dublin in Ireland from 9th January, opening up more opportunities for Malaysian travellers and businesses,” added Mr Jewsbury.

The 489 seat A380 operates as EK346 departing Dubai at 04:05hrs and arriving in Kuala Lumpur at 14:55hrs on the same day. The return leg, EK347, will depart Kuala Lumpur at 19:30hrs arriving in Dubai at 22:30hrs also on the same day.

Emirates’ A380 service arrives in Dubai at a convenient time giving passengers the options of onward connections to any of Emirates’ expanding list of over 116 European, Middle Eastern, African and American destinations.

Thai Airways (THAI) is set to be the first airline in Asia to fly a commercial passenger flight using biofuels, to support the company’s Travel Green initiative as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

THAI President Piyasvasti Amranand was quoted as having said that in raising environmental awareness and the effects of global warming, THAI, as the national carrier, has opted to operate a commercial flight using biofuel renewable energy as one way to help in the reduction of carbon dioxide. Amranand added that THAI hopes that its support and participation in using biofuels will encourage other carriers in the region to choose biofuel renewable energy over fossil fuels.

On December 21, THAI flew it first flight using biofuels. The inaugural flight departed from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport on Boeing 777-200 aircraft, carrying members of the press and representatives from organizations and government functions that support the biofuels project, such as PTT Public Company Limited, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Limited, Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited, Rolls Royce, and Boeing.

On December 22, THAI’s flight TG104 from Bangkok to Chiang Mai was the first passenger biofuels flight in Asia. Revenue from this flight went towards the development of renewable energy in Thailand. In an effort to promote environmental awareness among youth, THAI also flew 100 students and teachers on flight TG104 called the “Pah Nong Tong Fah”.

To reach sustained production of biofuels for aviation in Thailand, THAI will bring together organisations and businesses such as petroleum producers, research firms, educational institutions, aircraft and engine manufacturers, and different government bodies affiliated with the aviation industry to take part in the development. This project called “Sustainable Biofuels Development for Aviation Industry” aims to create both demand and supply, through clear national policies on biofuels, which can help to generate revenue in the agricultural sector. An important outcome is the potential for greater cooperation among the different aviation bodies at the national level for sound support and policies on sustained development of biofuels.

THAI is also cooperating with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in working towards reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 5% by the year 2020, and equivalent to zero carbon dioxide emissions by the year 2057.

Three of Thailand’s best-known hotels will change their names as the bells ring in the New Year 2012.

Sofitel Centara Grand Bangkok will become Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao Bangkok, Sofitel Centara Grand Resort & Villas Hua Hin will become Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin, and Novotel Hat Yai Centara will become Centara Hotel Hat Yai.

The name changes take place as the partnership between Accor, owner of the Sofitel and Novotel brands, and Centara Hotels & Resorts, ends amicably after 25-years. The staff at all three hotels will remain unchanged.

In anticipation of the rebranding, a complete renovation has been undertaken at Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao Bangkok, and a major renovation programme has been completed at Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin and at Centara Hotel Hat Yai.

The Centara-Accor relationship began with what was then the Sofitel Hua Hin in 1986, and will be formally dissolved at midnight on December 31st, 2011.

Centara has established itself as Thailand’s largest operator of hotels and resorts, with 54 properties at key destinations throughout the kingdom, and a fast-growing overseas portfolio that includes properties in the Maldives, Bali, Mauritius, Vietnam and the Philippines.

SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, will begin direct air services between Singapore and Darwin, Australia on 26 March 2012, subject to regulatory approvals.

The capital city of the Northern Territory will be the airline’s first destination in Australia since it began operations in 1984, when it was known as Tradewinds.

Flights will be operated four times a week, departing on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with next-day return flights, according to the following schedule:

MI802 Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun Singapore 1930hrs Darwin 0145hrs + 1

MI801 Mon, Tue, Thu, Sat Darwin 0230hrs Singapore 0530hrs

The new services will be operated with Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft, featuring both Business and Economy class cabins. Customers will be provided with a full service experience, including inflight meals, baggage allowance of 30kg and 20kg for Business and Economy class respectively, as well as through check-in if they are connecting to or from another SilkAir or Singapore Airlines point via Singapore.

With the launch of Darwin, the number of destinations in SilkAir’s route network will increase to 39 in 12 countries.

SilkAir’s Chief Executive, Mr. Marvin Tan, says the new route will boost the airline’s presence in the Australian market, which is currently being served by its parent company via five points, namely Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

“We are immensely excited to introduce our first destination in the South-West Pacific. Darwin is well known for its mining and tourism industries and we believe our new service will have much to offer to both the business and leisure traveler.”

“This is a very significant move for us and will complement our parent company’s ongoing efforts to better serve the Australian market, which has been given a boost by its recently approved alliance with Virgin Australia,”said Mr. Tan.

A modern metropolis, Darwin boasts rich and beautiful natural attractions such as the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, the world famous Katherine Gorge located in the Nitmiluk National Park, the culturally rich Tiwi Islands and the Lietchfield National Park, which is filled with amazing waterfalls, plunge pools, wildlife and birdlife.

Darwin is also the northern gateway to the famous Australian Outback, which includes attractions such as Alice Springs and Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock.

Customers are advised to note that the new flights may not be immediately available in computer reservations systems due to the lead-time required in making system updates. For more information on SilkAir, including its destinations and services, please visit silkair.com.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) today launched its series of differentiated marketing campaigns, starting with the New Discoveries campaign in Beijing, China. This has been tailored to suit the needs of consumers in China. In the coming months, customised marketing plans will be rolled out in phases across other key markets, including Australia, India, Indonesia and Malaysia.

The new approach, which is focused on addressing consumer needs, marks a departure from the destination marketing strategy that STB used to employ across different markets. The consumer marketing approach has resulted in more targeted and integrated marketing campaigns that will comprise PR, above and below-the-line advertising and digital marketing.

“In the past year, we have deepened the understanding of consumers in the various regions. This has allowed us to develop strategies that are customised to the needs of individual markets. By understanding consumer needs, we can create and deliver better quality experiences to visitors. This is a natural evolution of the YourSingapore destination brand that emphasises the personalisation of experiences. We believe that this visitor-centricity will increase the appeal and relevance of Singapore, and help build a stronger brand in the long term.” said Ms Sophia Ng, Executive Director, Brand and Marketing of the Singapore Tourism Board.

Earlier this year, STB embarked on various in-market engagements with consumers and trade which have provided an increased understanding of the consumers from these initial launch markets. This, coupled with STB’s market knowledge gleaned from years of operating overseas, enabled the team to develop customised marketing plans. With these insights, STB will also work with industry partners, both locally and in the markets, to develop and package more meaningful destination experiences.

Chinese Consumer Insights & New Discoveries Campaign
From conversations with various consumers and trade, STB found that whilst Chinese still come on packaged tours, many are increasingly making their own online bookings and travelling as free, independent travellers. More significantly, they sought a greater depth of travel experiences that include new, unique experiences.

“The New Discoveries marketing campaign leverages this consumer insight in order to enhance our engagement with the Chinese audience. Singapore is a city that is constantly evolving and renewing itself. On top of what consumers already know of Singapore’s well-known tourist attractions, we want to help Chinese deepen their understanding of our city, providing them with compelling reasons to visit Singapore again and again.” added Ms Ng, “Not only do we want to share the new experiences that Singapore offers, we would also like to encourage our Chinese visitors to look beyond the surface and uncover for themselves the hidden gems.”

STB has also partnered with three major travel agencies in China, namely GZL International Travel Service, CYTS and Ctrip to launch a series of New Discoveries packaged tours. In addition to pre-arranged flight and accommodation options, these free and easy tour packages come with a fully personalisable itinerary. Chinese can choose from a menu of dining, culture and retail recommendations, coupled with essential travel services such as car rental and guided tours. Alternatively, semi free and easy tour packages, with guided tour services for the first part of the tour, can help first-time visitors familiarise themselves with Singapore, before they customise their itinerary for the remaining part of the trip.

The New Discoveries launch event was held at Beijing’s edgy 798 art district with home-grown celebrity Stefanie Sun playing her part as Singapore’s Tourism Ambassador for Greater China by sharing her favourite spots in Singapore. In the coming months, the campaign will also feature local Chinese advocates at various PR and communication touch points, including social media platforms such as Sina Weibo, Douban and Renren to reach the Chinese audience.

About the Singapore Tourism Board

Loss-making Malaysia Airlines today unveiled a business plan to return the Group back to the black by 2013 with a ‘base case’ Group target of loss of RM165 million in 2012. A series of necessary actions for next year is expected to generate an improvement potential of between RM1.178 billion to 1.508 billion in the profit impact for the Group. These measures include shrinking its network, a relentless focus on costs and aggressive efforts to win back customers.

Overall, the national carrier is embarking on a two-pronged business strategy focusing on recovery of the business and sustaining its growth to ensure that Malaysia Airlines realizes its vision to become the preferred premium carrier that is well-positioned for the coming consolidation of the Asian aviation market place.

“Malaysia Airlines needs to make hard and unpopular decisions simply to survive in order for it to then have the possibility to thrive and realize the airline’s vision,” said Group Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, at the unveiling of the Business Plan to the media today. Also present at the media briefing was Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed Rashdan Yusof.

The airline recently reported a nine month cumulative loss of RM1.247 billion for the first three quarters of 2011, and does not expect to make a profit for the full year.

“The market environment remains very challenging for Malaysia Airlines, given the increased competition from low cost and full service carriers, overcapacity in the Asian aviation sector, high fuel cost and the volatile global economy,” he added.

Malaysia Airlines’ poor performance was also adversely affected by its old fleet of aircraft (average fleet age of 13 years), a loss of focus on its full service offering leading to a drop in quality standards and passenger load, and lower average pricing levels compared to regional peers.

“While we face a number of inherent challenges, Malaysia Airlines can leverage on its strengths including our award-winning cabin crew which has been consistently ranked in the top two positions by Skytrax, acknowledged as the industry’s benchmark. Malaysia’s competitive cost position will be an added advantage for the airline.”

The Business Plan lists five fundamental Recovery Plan actions to stem the losses, restructure the business organization and regain the airline’s position as a commercially successful flag carrier.

The first is to make Malaysia Airlines’ network smaller yet profitable which will entail suspending loss-making services to and from Cape Town, Johannesburg, Buenos Aires and other loss-making routes.

“Successful turnarounds of other airlines, such as JAL or Garuda, have been based on aggressive network cuts. The cutting of Malaysia Airlines’ Available Seat Kilometres (ASK) by approximately 12 percent next year is expected to save between RM220 million to RM302 million,” explained Ahmad Jauhari.

Given the necessity ‘to shrink to grow’, the Group says it has no choice but to right-size the organisation for the greater good of its survival. “A leaner and meaner organisation will quickly become an agile, competitive and winning organisation. It will ultimately be the turning point on whether Malaysia Airlines can achieve and sustain acceptable financial performance”, added Ahmad Jauhari.

The second Recovery Plan action is to win back customers. Malaysia Airlines will be deploying 23 new aircraft in 2012 equipped with state-of-the-art passenger amenities and supported by intensified sales and marketing. Additionally, the airline expects to improve its revenue management and tactical sales to optimize yields which will result in an estimated profit impact of between RM394 million to RM477 million.

On-going focus on cost will be the third Recovery Plan action to undertaken by Malaysia Airlines. Savings from fixed costs reduction, procurement and productivity improvement programmes will realize a positive impact of between RM309 million to RM392 million.

The airline’s fourth Recovery Plan action is to simplify its business by focusing on its core premium carrier service and spinning off some ancillary businesses including its aerospace engineering, pilot training, cargo and ground services. This move is to enable these businesses to grow and achieve their full potential. The profit impact is estimated to be between RM255 million and RM337 million.

Given the new plane deliveries in 2012, the Recovery Plan action looks into the funding gap, which is expected to be addressed by positive operating cash flow, new debt and leasing arrangements, working capital boost via the return of pre-delivery payment deposits, proceeds from spin-offs and the support from shareholders.

“These actions for business recovery are fundamental to stem our losses and ensure that the Group returns to the black potentially by 2012. We need to move Malaysia Airlines out of this difficult situation in order for it to grow again and fly more satisfied customers to more places, build rewarding careers for our employees and build a global brand that will make all Malaysians proud,” he said.

The Management recognises that it is imperative to have a sustainable growth plan for Malaysia Airlines to lay the foundation for it to realise its vision to become the preferred premium carrier.

Ahmad Jauhari elaborated that for Malaysia Airlines to be sustainable in the longer term, the airline needs to focus on the following strategic ‘game changer’ initiatives.

By the second half of 2012, a new regional premium airline will be launched to connect Malaysia to ASEAN destinations and key cities in South Asia and Greater China, using a fleet of Boeing 737-800. On the longer-term, it will fly all of the domestic and regional routes serviced by Malaysia Airlines today.

“We intend to create a separate management structure to focus on the unique customer needs of regional premium travelers. This new airline shall set new standards for product and service quality, cost efficiency, and operational excellence. It will set the template for airline success,” he explained.

Segmentation of the businesses by aircraft type and distance travelled is also practiced widely by major airlines including United, Qantas, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines to allow the airline with smaller aircraft to provide commuting and ‘feed’ services to the parent companies.

Another key ‘game changer’ under the Sustainability strategy is to leverage on alliances and partnerships with the oneworld global airline alliance. Malaysia Airlines will become a full member of this global alliance by the second half of 2012.

The benefits of the alliance include a broader network of international destinations, enhanced load factor and hub connectivity, cost savings through joint purchasing and equipment and resource sharing plus a basis for customers to increase their loyalty to Malaysia Airlines.

“We are also exploring the possibility of joint ventures with partners in order to serve multiple markets together, while reducing the financial risks of going alone”, said Ahmad Jauhari.

On the Comprehensive Collaboration Framework with AirAsia and AirAsia X announced in August this year, Malaysia Airlines has begun discussions with the three airlines on joint procurement and consolidation of key activities leading to greater efficiencies. Consolidated operations will deliver better service at lower costs such as fuel purchasing, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), training and ground services. Savings from these initiatives is estimated at RM100 million per annum.

To support the Business Plan’s Recovery and Sustainability programmes, Ahmad Jauhari listed three fundamental organisational imperatives – branded customer experience, continuous operational improvement and turning the Group into a ‘winning organisation’ with a high performance culture.

“With the full support of our team in embracing the three organisational imperatives, Malaysia Airlines is confident that it will be able to successfully implement the Business Plan and realise the airline’s vision to become the preferred premium carrier,” concluded Ahmad Jauhari.
