Qatar Airways Announces Six New Routes in Europe and Asia

Qatar Airways today announced its expansion programme was continuing with vigour with plans to launch six new routes in Europe and Asia from October 2010.

The Doha-based airline will phase in the route expansion over a four-month period with daily flights to Phuket – after Bangkok, its second destination in Thailand – kicking off the growth drive on October 11. The new flights will operate via Kuala Lumpur.

Three weeks later, beginning November 1, Qatar Airways adds the Vietnamese capital Hanoi to its network with four flights a week via Bangkok. The new route will support existing services to Vietnam’s commercial centre and largest city of Ho Chi Minh City, where flights will also be stepped up from four-a-week to daily.

November 24 marks the launch of the carrier’s European expansion drive with thrice-weekly flights to the French Mediterranean city of Nice. Operating via Milan, the Nice operation will strengthen Qatar Airways’ services to France, where it already operates to the capital Paris.

The New Year sees Qatar Airways’ entry into eastern Europe with the launch of four flights a week to the Romanian capital of Bucharest, starting on January 17. The services continue on to Budapest, capital city of Hungary.

And with five flights a week from January 31, the Belgian capital of Brussels, home of the European Parliament, rounds off an impressive list of destinations for the airline, which has maintained its strategy of opening exciting new routes around the world since launching just 13 years ago.

Announcing the expansion at the airline’s annual commercial conference in the Qatari capital Doha today, Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker spoke of the carrier’s commitment to develop its route network far and wide from its hub. Read the rest of this entry »

Singapore Airlines To Introduce New Cabin Products On B777-200 Aircraft

Singapore Airlines will be introducing new cabin products on some of its Boeing 777-200 aircraft from later this month.

A total of 11 B777-200s will be refitted with the Airline’s most recent cabin offerings, to provide additional space, comfort and greater product consistency across the fleet. The refitted B777-200s will be configured with 38 Business Class and 228 Economy Class seats.

Business Class will feature a genuine leather, incline lie-flat seat in a modern design. Also found on Singapore Airlines’ Airbus A330-300 aircraft, it boasts a personal partition and advanced control panel that enables the customer to personalise seating preferences or select from various preset options. A six-way adjustable headrest and lumbar support will provide maximum ergonomic support for a more comfortable rest.

The Economy Class cabin will be refurbished with a new contemporary look. Seat covers, designed by Givenchy, will feature soothing colours as well as richer and softer fabrics, similar to those found on Singapore Airlines’ new Airbus A380 and B777-300ER aircraft.

Enhancements will also be made to Singapore Airlines’ award-winning KrisWorld in-flight entertainment system, for better Audio-Video On Demand features in both cabin classes, such as a more intuitive and user-friendly graphical interface. Business Class seats will feature larger 15.4-inch screens, while screens in Economy Class will be increased to 9 inches later this year.

The first refitted B777-200 aircraft will operate on the Singapore-Shanghai route from 23 February. As more B777-200s are refitted, selected flights to Beijing, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hong Kong and Chennai will also be operated with these aircraft. Read the rest of this entry »

World’s Top Airports Moving To Paperless Travel

Most of the world’s leading airport operators (80%) intend to make passenger self-service the primary channel for check-in, according to a new global survey launched today. And 52% rated the introduction of “electronic documents” as the technology which will have the most significant impact at airports in the near future, initially driven by the adoption of bar-coded boarding passes sent directly to mobile phones – a key enabler for genuinely paperless travel.

The 6th annual SITA Airport IT Trends survey, co-sponsored by Airline Business and the Airports Council International (ACI), had a record 106 responses from airports and airport groups representing 172 airports from around the world including 56 from the Top 100 in terms of revenue and passengers.

The survey which was launched today at the ACI World Conference in Kuala Lumpur, also found that IT budgets for airports in 2008 were largely unaffected by the global economic downturn with IT investments as % of revenue decreasing slightly from 3.5% in 2007 to 3.2% in 2008. The world airport IT industry is estimated to be worth $3 billion and 45% of this year’s survey respondents expect an increase in budget in 2010 while only 14% expect a lower budget.

Catherine Mayer, SITA Vice President for Airports, said: “This year’s survey confirms that self-service is a global trend with almost 80% of respondents planning to make it the primary means for check-in by 2010 as is already the case at 40% of the world’s top 100 airports.
