The Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 is now flying to Frankfurt and New York, with the inaugural Singapore – Frankfurt – New York service having departed Singapore shortly after midnight.
With more than 450 customers on board, flight SQ26 is scheduled to make its inaugural touchdown in Frankfurt at 0610hrs local time. It will then depart the German city at 0820hrs and arrive at New York’s JFK airport at 1110hrs, all times local. The daily A380 flights will replace an existing daily Boeing 747-400 service to JFK Airport via Frankfurt, representing a daily increase of 25% in seat capacity.
Frankfurt and New York will be Singapore Airlines’ ninth and tenth destinations to receive the superjumbo. Frankfurt is Singapore Airlines’ fourth point in Europe to be added to the list, after London, Paris and Zurich, while New York is the second point in North America, after Los Angeles. Emirates, one of the world’s fastest-growing international airlines, celebrated the New Year in a ‘big’ way by becoming the first airline to operate a scheduled Airbus A380 service to Malaysia.
The airline’s flagship, operating as EK346, piloted by Malaysian national Captain Kwong Yung Ling arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Sunday afternoon to a traditional welcome of a water canon salute.

Thai Airways (THAI) is set to be the first airline in Asia to fly a commercial passenger flight using biofuels, to support the company’s Travel Green initiative as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
THAI President Piyasvasti Amranand was quoted as having said that in raising environmental awareness and the effects of global warming, THAI, as the national carrier, has opted to operate a commercial flight using biofuel renewable energy as one way to help in the reduction of carbon dioxide. Amranand added that THAI hopes that its support and participation in using biofuels will encourage other carriers in the region to choose biofuel renewable energy over fossil fuels. SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, will begin direct air services between Singapore and Darwin, Australia on 26 March 2012, subject to regulatory approvals.
The capital city of the Northern Territory will be the airline’s first destination in Australia since it began operations in 1984, when it was known as Tradewinds.
Flights will be operated four times a week, departing on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with next-day return flights, according to the following schedule:
- MI802 Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun Singapore 1930hrs Darwin 0145hrs + 1
- MI801 Mon, Tue, Thu, Sat Darwin 0230hrs Singapore 0530hrs
The new services will be operated with Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft, featuring both Business and Economy class cabins. Customers will be provided with a full service experience, including inflight meals, baggage allowance of 30kg and 20kg for Business and Economy class respectively, as well as through check-in if they are connecting to or from another SilkAir or Singapore Airlines point via Singapore.

Loss-making Malaysia Airlines today unveiled a business plan to return the Group back to the black by 2013 with a ‘base case’ Group target of loss of RM165 million in 2012. A series of necessary actions for next year is expected to generate an improvement potential of between RM1.178 billion to 1.508 billion in the profit impact for the Group. These measures include shrinking its network, a relentless focus on costs and aggressive efforts to win back customers.
Overall, the national carrier is embarking on a two-pronged business strategy focusing on recovery of the business and sustaining its growth to ensure that Malaysia Airlines realizes its vision to become the preferred premium carrier that is well-positioned for the coming consolidation of the Asian aviation market place. SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, is set to begin services to Koh Samui in Thailand from 27 September 2011.
Flights are scheduled to operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
Koh Samui will be SilkAir’s third destination in Thailand, after Phuket and Chiang Mai. The new services will be operated with the Airbus 319 aircraft, featuring both Business and Economy Class cabins.
Bangkok Airways will be the codeshare partner on these flights. SilkAir will also codeshare on Bangkok Airways’ daily evening services between Singapore and Koh Samui, providing customers with more flight options.
Currently, Bangkok Airways operates a daily non-stop service on this route with the same aircraft type, leaving Koh Samui at 1635hrs and departing from Singapore at 2010hrs. Read the rest of this entry »

Singapore Airlines is pleased to announce the addition of a seventh daily flight between Singapore and Hong Kong, making the territory its busiest point outside of Singapore, with 56 outbound flights weekly (including flights departing Hong Kong for San Francisco).
The new service will commence on 27 March 2011. SQ890, operated by a Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, will depart Singapore at 0735hrs and arrive in Hong Kong at 1120hrs. The return flight, SQ891, will depart Hong Kong at 1230hrs and arrive in Singapore at 1610hrs.

Qatar Airways today announced a huge expansion in Thailand with the introduction of a third daily flight to Bangkok, effective November 1st.
The increase in capacity comes just three weeks after the airline launches scheduled flights to the popular Thai resort of Phuket.
The Bangkok service will facilitate increasing demand from many parts of the world, particularly European and North and South American customers for travel to Thailand. Qatar Airways’ Northern Winter schedule upgrades offer convenient connections for travellers both in and out of the Thai capital.
The additional Bangkok service will continue to Vietnam with four of the flights heading onwards to the capital Hanoi and three onto Ho Chi Minh City.
Passengers originating in Thailand or Vietnam can also purchase tickets to fly between Bangkok and both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on Qatar Airways.
Beginning October 12, Qatar Airways introduces six-flights-a-week to Phuket via Kuala Lumpur. With the Bangkok flights, the airline’s Thai operations will step up from 21 to 27 flights a week across two destinations.
The airline’s upcoming Phuket flights have drawn positive response from businesses across the island eager to capitalise on an increase in tourism numbers. Similarly, Qatar Airways has seen huge bookings from holidaymakers, particularly from across its European markets for the new route.

Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) and Tiger Airways Holdings Limited today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to form a new low fare airline called Thai Tiger Airways Private Limited. The new airline will operate the same low fare, low cost model as the other airlines in the Tiger Airways Group, and is expected to commence operations in the first quarter of 2011, pending regulatory approvals.
Based in Bangkok, Thai Tiger will operate international and domestic flights out of Suvarnabhumi International Airport offering short-haul, point-to-point services within a 5- hour flying radius.
