With more than 40 journalists and eight television stations in attendance, a September 24th press conference was held to announce the details for the fourth annual Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT.
Phuket hosts the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour season finale on Karon Beach with more than 70 Beach Volleyball teams from over 30 countries having already entered the six-day SWATCH FIVB World Tour event to be held here November 3-8. The US$190,000 double-elimination tournament is the last of 16 women’s 2009 international Beach Volleyball calendar.
With three Thailand women’s teams present at the press conference, ranking governmental officials were in attendance, including Kanokphand Chulakasem, the Governor Sports Authority of Thailand, Vansadej Thavarasukha, the Deputy Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and Tri Augkaradacha, the Deputy Governor of the Phuket Province. On Saturday, October 10, 2009, what has become an annual institution will once again take place on city streets – at Midnight. This Annual Amari Watergate Hotel & BMW Thailand Charity Midnight Run.
It is the only race in Bangkok to be held at Midnight, and offers competitors a choice of 2 distances – 6k or 12k. The City streets will be closed and protected by a police and security contingent of about 400 officers, and supported along the route by local residents, and shop owners, together with the management and staff of the Amari Watergate Hotel. The atmosphere is tremendous, with over 5,000 runners, both the local and the foreign.
The winners for the best record in 12k. of male and female championship will graciously receive the Royal trophy of HRH Princess Sirindhorn. Winners in each age category including the family team and the fancy team will receive a trophy. Everyone who crosses the finishing line will receive a special commemorative medal. Amari Watergate Hotel will celebrate with all the participants at a cocktail party afterwards at Henry J. Bean’s Bar & Grill, at which there will be a raffle with lots of prizes.
